The Benefits of Music Lessons

Learning to play a musical instrument has changed my life for the better. The way that I listen to and interpret music has changed drastically since I started taking music lessons at age fifteen. Learning how to play the drums has not only improved my musical ability but also helped me develop focus skills and discipline, two areas that have proven themselves useful in many other genres of academics.

It was like I tapped into a different part of my brain when started learning how to play the drums.  My coordination improved on all counts; it was very exciting to see myself progressing. Playing the drums also made me better skateboarder and athlete; I believe this can be credited to the separation of limbs coordination that the instrument requires. I found that I had more balance and stamina thanks to playing the drums.

It is amazing what playing a musical instrument can do to ones life. It can bring confidence, motivation and happiness. Even though taking music lessons may be challenging at times, it also brings joy and a since of accomplishment.  I have such fond memories of my beginning days of music lessons. I remember how excited I was when I learned how to play my first full song, or when I learned my first drum fill. I will never forget the feeling that I felt when I played my first recital. How I was nervous until the first crack of my snare drum echoed throughout the room. It was like there was no one else there except for my drum set and I. I completely forgot all about my nerves and just focused on showing everyone how far I had come and how much I had improved. Learning how to play an instrument helped me over come my fears and accomplish things that I never knew I could do, and more important than anything is that I had fun doing it.

Taking music lessons is also a great way to keep kids out of trouble and teach them discipline in fun way. Plus the skills they learn can transfer over to many other aspects of their life, and will stick with them for the rest of their life.  Furthermore, playing music is an excellent way to express ones self and relieve the stress and tension of the daily grind. That's why music lessons are great for adults and children alike. There is nothing like coming home after a long day and releasing my frustration on my drum set, after just a few minutes of playing I forget about my stress and leave the instrument with a clear mind. I find playing music very rejuvenating and refreshing.

The bottom line is that taking music lessons is a great way to improve coordination, express your self and relieve stress. In addition, Learning to play an instrument also improves focus skills, which are imperative in all areas of academia.  Lastly, playing a musical instrument is rewarding, exciting and fun.
