Cindy Abts
Percussion Performance
Cindy Abts is a specialist in
percussion performance and education. She currently has a private
percussion studio in California's Inland Empire. Cindy has worked as a
performer and educator with concert bands, jazz bands, orchestras, jazz
combos, steel bands, marching bands, drumlines and drum corps. She is
also the owner of Abts Mallets.
She completed her bachelor's
degree in percussion performance with a minor in computer information
systems at Humboldt State University and master's in percussion
performance at the Ohio State University. She is currently completing
her doctorate at Ball State University with a primary emphasis in
percussion performance and a secondary emphasis in band conducting.
Cindy has taught percussion,
jazz, music theory, music history, music technology and conducting at
Dickinson State University. While she taught at DSU she also directed
the jazz band, jazz combos, drumline and percussion ensemble. She has
previously taught at both Ball State University and Indiana Wesleyan
University.
As a performer she has played
in a number of ensembles, including the Ohio State Faculty Chamber
Ensemble, and orchestras in Eureka California, and Kokomo, Marion, and
Muncie Indiana. She has been the principal percussionist and timpanist
with the Eureka Symphony and the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra. She
has worked with conductors such as Denis de Coteau and Leonard Slatkin
and performed in master classes for Robert Van Sice, Katarzyna Mycka and
Frederic Macarez. She has studied percussion with Jerry Steinholtz, Joe
Lizama, Eugene Novotney and Erwin C. Mueller.
In 2004 Cindy was named the
"Outstanding Teacher of the Year" in the College of Arts and Sciences at
Dickinson State University.
